A necklace is a
piece of jewelry that is worn around the neck for ornamental value. Necklace
gives beauty to the neck as it touches the throat. Women love jewelry and would
love to be looked upon as being attractive to others and to this end, pieces of
jewelry are their passion. History looks at a necklace as a
seductive piece of jewelry and in those days, women were said to have worn
necklaces to attract attention to the cleavage. The Italians wore them with
pendants that were hollow and filled with perfume. Egyptians wore heavy gold
necklaces on very low necklines, giving them a look par excellence. Queen
Alexandra was said to have worn real pearl necklaces for all formal events and
state occasions. Pearl necklaces were so expensive that it is said that an
American skyscraper was exchanged for the price of a pearl necklace.
Punk
rock devil eye cross necklaces are made from various metals and a locket or
pendant can also be attached to them. Pendants of cross are worn by the
Christians while pendants of Gods and Goddesses are worn by Hindus. They are
also studded with precious stones, beads, shells, or wood to give them a grand
look. Necklaces that are worn high on the neck are known as chokers. The
necklace that ends on the cleavage is called the Matine necklace. Opera necklaces
are longer and end below the breasts. Then there are the rope necklaces that
are longer then the opera necklaces. Everyone has an individual style. There
are people who wear lots of necklaces at once, some wear none at all, and some
people change what they wear according to the outfit they are wearing.
A necklace or a pendant can change a boring outfit into a more interesting
look. It may add texture, movement, and color. Some believe that necklaces made
of certain gems, stones, and elements have positive health benefits. Wearing a
necklace is a way to show one's individuality. Many wear jewelry to identify
themselves as having a certain interest, like a horseshoe shaped pendant for a
western rider or an anchor for a boating enthusiast. Others may choose
something whimsical to show their playful side even though they might be
wearing a traditional navy business suit. The colors in the necklace can be
used to show off or compliment one's skin tone and/or to enhance the color of
the fabric on which the jewelry rests. Multi-colored necklaces can pull
together an outfit made up of contrasting colors or tie in the pop-of-color in
a contrasting shoe or handbag.
A necklace can be a
statement of one's faith, by wearing a cross, a Star of David, or a peace
symbol. It can be a way of showing off your hobby of beading, ceramics work, or
work with semi-precious stones. The real reason to wear any jewelry is to visually
share a bit of your personality with those people you encounter on a day-to-day
basis. An interesting necklace or pendant can give someone permission to start
up a conversation or to ask where you got the interesting necklace.
